The Fashion World & Its Issue With Race

Today fashion journalist @bxnpxrk made a very important and insightful Instagram post, opening people's eyes to the real world of fashion - where discrimination is rife and most definitely unjust.

I have always noticed the lack of inclusivity of other races and ethnicities throughout my years of being a fan of anything fashion related: magazines, brand ads, video promotion campaigns, runway shows, model-scouting series, but as a child/teenager I never really thought to raise the issue of it (hello white privilege 😖). However, I (very naively) believed in recent years there had been a huge change to the industry since these unfair and outdated issues have been raised publicly more and more ... but no, I was so W R O N G.

It is shocking to read the figures and information below, when we are living in the 21st century. It baffles me well and truly how black people are still out there fighting for basic human rights. It goes without saying that they shouldn't have to - nor should have ever HAD to - we are all human, we all bleed the same colour blood. It disgusts me to a whole new level how racism is still even a thing. HOW can you be so concerned and offended at the colour of someone's skin? It literally makes you no different to any other human.

This information was needed. It showed me how the industry I've always dreamed of working in is still so prejudice and stereotyped. Change isn't just 'needed', it is VITAL.

Going forward I am going to ensure I challenge brands that don't see diversity as a necessity, I will keep signing petitions and making people aware of companies who don't seem to show any compassion to black people who are still suffering in our supposedly 'developed' society. #BLACKLIVESMATTER spread the word and information to all that need it, and if you're white - USE THIS PRIVILEGE TO MAKE A CHANGE.
