As previously mentioned, after issues with my uni accommodation last year I opted to defer my place and have a gap year (much to my mum's despair). It was a highly debated decision as I had no clue what I was going to do for the next year, and I had many different opinions thrown at me as to why I should or shouldn't take a year out.
An example of some of the positives were:
- working for the year meant I could ~attempt~ to save money to help out during first year
- I could learn to cook for myself to prepare for moving out
- a possibility of being able to do some sort of travelling - I'd be able to visit my friend's at their uni accommodation
- experiencing the 'uni lifestyle' from visiting my friends could help me decide whether uni was for me or not
And the negatives:
- working for the year could mean I may become too reliant on having a large amount of money, as apposed to frequently being a 'skint student'
- a year out of education may put me off going back into studying
- living at home without many of my friends being around me could make me too comfortable and not want to branch out
- as all my friend's moved away to uni, it could leave me feeling lonely
After weighing up both the pros and cons for a week, my uncle finally settled the decision for me and persuaded me to take a year out - and a year later, I have had one of the best years of my life!
