Our Vogue Photoshoot

Based on the 2012 'Beautiful Strangers' editorial by Mario Sorrenti, my group and I narrowed down its key themes of: movement, industrial, experimentation, sculptural, futuristic, surreal, avant-garde, abstract.

On analysis we found the image to be almost horror-like, due to its location and bizarre theme. The colours were neutral generally, with no warm tones and the occasional pop of neon. It has a distinct dramatic and edgy feel through the linear style, consisting of lines as a background, which emphasise a geometric look. Also, the use of diagonal lines adds the appearance of movement into the images. The model herself is used as an object, with her face hidden throughout by her sunglasses, hair or pose.

After being given the focus of a bag as our central accessory, we took 5 key words/phrases from the shoot which were set to inspire our own one: prismatic, cold, structured chaos, harsh geometry, binary/androgyny.

Following this, we brainstormed as a group on the accessory of a bag; protection, secrecy, tiredness, concealment, pollution, shapes, wealth, branding, investments, impractical, feminine connotations. These are just a few of the links we made, I believe our accessory was a good one to be given since there were so many options to go forward with.

Our final shoot was set up in Trinity Car Park and was very successful overall.

Our five key words incorporated within our photoshoot were cold, androgyny, angular-structures, industrial and utilitarian. We were given the fashion accessory ‘Bag’ We incorporated this through the use of plastic bags which resulted in reflections as well as directing the model away from being the focal point of the shoot. The photoshoot took place on the 2nd December, Monday at Trinity car park Nottingham. The model wore a suit and black Dr Martens as it was androgynous and lacked a gender specific look. The poses of the model were structural and angular paralleling the harsh industrial landscape of the photoshoot. The lighting used was harsh bright white lights from the car park whilst using a flash on the camera, which we chose to resonate with the vogue photoshoot that used bright neon lights and dark shadows.

The photographs were taken by Hollie Daws, Eve meadows and Katie Lynch whilst Ella Oulton modelled and helped direct the photoshoot alongside Kaitlin Williams, Paige Jones and Mia Davies. The materials used were multiple plastic bags, blue cut out geometric shapes, a grey suit and chunky Dr Martens. In regards to the photoshoot of the boots, there was an element of Wes Anderson inspiration with the comedic feet sticking out of the plastic bags which is very in your face and obvious in regards to the narrative. The photo of the model standing with her head down intertwines a horror element which was immediately recognised within the Mario Sorrenti vogue shoot. The suit worn gives an androgynous feel whilst the pose mirrors on both sides strategically placing the model in the middle of the photo. The strong tones of blue and yellow within the third photoshoot contradicts to the pose of the model as she is very still looking as though she is in rigour mortis contrasting to the brightness of the colours and shapes.
