Savage X Fenty Show '19

Since I was a kid, Rihanna has always been an idol of mine. From her music, her beauty, and personal style; to the way she speaks and presents herself, her iconic appearance in Oceans 11, and not forgetting her power in becoming a female boss (her Fenty Beauty range has brought her more money than her music ever has). She is definitely an icon I look up to.

Her underwear brand Savage X Fenty "celebrates fearlessness, confidence and inclusivity". This is definitely evident from her gorgeous range of models; all different sizes and races, including trans women and disabled models too. There is an immediate sense of girl-power and feminism within the brand, always focusing on empowering women and making everyone comfortable and confident in their own skin - something which is very much needed in this era of the total saturation of photoshopped "Insta baddies" pretending they really be looking so perfect 24/7 ... 🤨

"The label has disrupted and redefined the marketplace with its accessible price point and extensive assortment of lingerie."

Rewinding back to September 2019, set in the Barclays Centre, New York, the ultra exclusive Savage X Fenty show came to life. For once this show wasn't only made for fashion's top spectators and photographers. Instead, Amazon Prime exclusively captured the documentation of the behind-the-scenes process, as well as an essentially cinematic experience of the show itself.

This was a very, very clever & forward-thinking way of marketing her brand in my opinion, as she's quite literally made history (despite claiming she wasn't trying to). She's enabled her everyday consumers to have an insight into the show, with the exclusive element still intact as of course you have to be a Prime member - another money maker for Amazon due to the influx of all her fans eager to watch this history-making show.

The tweet above pretty much sums up my views on the incredible show. I literally had goosebumps the entire way through, and I still feel emotional every time I watch it (4 times and counting now🤷🏽‍♀️). As a young woman I have never felt so proud and empowered by the female body.

I think I felt this particular way because the brand stands for something which no other lingerie show or ad of the past has. It is completely shown through the female lens. For example, the show wasn't about catering to what men want to see, it was about standing confident and taking control of your own sexiness, on us girls' own terms.

The show itself was a fusion of live music, dancing, the catwalk 'walk' and ultimately an exhibition of natural, beautiful female figures.

The cast included: supermodels such as Gigi & Bella Hadid, singer Normani - leading a dance crew (arguably the best scene of the show), Big Sean, A$AP Ferg, Migos, DJ Khaled, Halsey, MamaCax (an amputee slaying the fashion and blogging world) and trans queen Laverne Cox.

The support across social media shows how influential the show was. Even a quick search on Twitter months later, I can still find hundreds of tweets from people across the globe expressing their love for the show, the brand, and Rihanna herself.

I loved the tweet below as I believe it really captures the excitement of how women of all sizes felt - since the typical advertising of underwear would include classic supermodel figures which stick to the typical AA - B cup sizes. Unlike this brand, where the products fit sizes up to 46 H.

There is something about Rihanna's laidback attitude and confidence that amazes me, her whole personality is so captivating and beautiful - always striving to improve herself and empower women.

Enjoy 🤪
