What the MET Gala Could Have Been...

It's that time of year again, the Met Gala time. It's every fashion lover's favourite event, and anyone's favourite Monday night. However, this year it isn't happening... *cries internally*
The Met Gala is a nickname for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala. It's basically an opening-night party and fundraiser for an annual fashion exhibition which is curated by the Costume Institute, the museum's fashion department and the only curatorial section at the Met which has to fund itself.
If you don't already know what it is, or have never heard of it, then I'm going to assume you've been living under a rock. It is the party of the year for the fashion industry, and it is oh so exclusive too. By 'exclusive' I mean, it is reported that tickets cost $30,000, yes, THIRTY thousand dollars, to attend the event. It is estimated the event itself costs $3.5 million, and to attend you must be personally approved by the one and only Anna Wintour. On top of this, your outfit has to be a designer spectacular, your makeup must be done professionally, oh and your hair should be pristine too!
It is said that tables go for prices between $275,000 to $500,000, and they cost even more if they're paid for by sponsors. At the 2015 Met Gala, Yahoo reportedly paid a whopping $3 million for two tables... madness. However, some celebrities do attend for free if they're sitting at a table which a brand (such as Yahoo) paid for, and they are often lent dresses by designers.
Below are some of the crazy looks from the past few years:
This year's planned Met Gala theme was "About Time: Fashion and Duration," and it was set to be sponsored by Louis Vuitton and Condé Nast.
Artist Aggie Whelan Kenny was commissioned by brand 'HighSnobiety' to create some 'fashion fan-fiction' for the Met Gala 2020 which never happened. They pulled together some of their most optimistic expectations of outfits, for some of the Gala's best-dressed regulars, all pictured below:

Using this year's theme of time, a throwback outfit for Naomi Campbell seemed relevant as she is turning 50 (not like you'd ever guess), and this look was one she wore for her first ever Versace show, and since remained iconic.
For Kim Kardashian, a vintage Mulger piece seemed fitting, and definitely in keeping with her recent Met Gala efforts. I just love the illustrations and how well the outfits drape on the celebrities bodies.
"Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will be postponed to a later date," - Anna Wintour, Vogue
The Gala has been postponed indefinitely, and is the latest high profile event derailed due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Although the luxury fashion sector is being severely impacted, I think this has perhaps come at a time in which the industry needed a revamp and some changes.
